Wide Local Excision for Melanoma and /or Atypical Nevus

A wide local excision is the removal of certain melanomas/nevi including a wider margin of normal surrounding skin to ensure a wide clear margin with no residual skin cancer. The most common reason for performing this operation is for complete removal of skin cancer.
What to Expect Day of Surgery
Once the area for surgery has been numbed, the area is widely excised by making an incision around the lesion, including a relevant amount of clear skin dependent on diagnosis. The wound is then closed with stitches. Stitches usually remain in place for 7-14 days, unless dissolvable stitches are used. This is then sent to the laboratory for analysis, and you will be notified of the results within 7 days.
After the Final Repair
- You will receive wound care instructions
- Stitches may be removed at a follow-up visit (when we can we place dissolving sutures)
- Long-term skin checks are important, as melanoma patients have a higher risk of developing future skin cancers
Risks and Side Effects
- As with any surgery, risks may include:
- Bleeding or bruising
- Infection
- Scarring
- Temporary swelling or numbness
- Need for additional stages or repair
