What is it?

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) – BLU-U® Blue Light Therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT), also known as BLU-U® Blue Light Therapy, combines a light-sensitive medication with a special blue light to destroy abnormal skin cells.

During your visit:

  1. A light-sensitive solution (aminolevulinic acid, or ALA) is applied to the treatment area.
  2. The medication is allowed to absorb into the abnormal cells for a period of time.
  3. The area is then exposed to a blue light, which activates the medication and selectively destroys damaged cells while minimizing injury to surrounding healthy skin.

Advantages

Possible Side Effects

After treatment, you must avoid direct sunlight and bright indoor lighting for approximately 48 hours, as the treated skin remains temporarily light-sensitive.

Typical Treatment

Many patients achieve excellent results with one or two treatments, although additional sessions may be recommended depending on the amount of sun damage or the condition being treated.

Photodynamic therapy is highly effective for treating precancerous lesions and widespread sun damage but is not appropriate for most skin cancers.
